The Next Step

Thu May 22, 2008, 6:44 AM
I've recently come to the conclusion that, most of the work I've made so far is pretty similar in terms of style or complexity. This is something I think, I need to change because if it continues a certain level of boredom will be generated whilst I'm working, with never really exceeding to an even bigger potential that every person has.

My method of modeling on most of my work has been pretty similar, in most cases polygonal modeling and not really using shapes, splines, and Nurbs to the best effect that they hold. To boost my 3d-ness I just went back through a load of stuff in my book and took notes on all the different approaches to modeling, which will be really helpfull in expanding my 3d skills when used effectively.

It's not that I have a lack of ideas on what to model, its a case of how I should approach the work, and sometimes when I'm not too sure I get scared and decide to turn away from the idea. I was lying awake in bed last night thinking some stuff through when I had the idea of creating a fully life-size scene from command and conquer, buildings and units and everything like in from a persons pespective.
What I think puts me off from making such large scenes is the time it takes and whether I will mess up in the process, but I need to learn that 3d isn't just something you 'get' it's something you can never really get since it has unlimited potential and you can't create a fairly decent piece of work in a small amount of time, not that I'm saying quick models are not good, I'm saying that getting something perfect for yourself, tweaking and such can take a lot longer than it seems.

Anyway, IMO all this abstract stuff I've done recently isnt really modeling, its just kinda playing around in the 3d environment and placing objects in correspondance to others, yeh it looks good but its not really truly using the program effectively so I'm going to drop abstract soon and begin working on the more realistic side of things.

Space

Fri Dec 28, 2007, 2:48 AM
Was testin out textures and stuff on planets earlier, then wiki'd some space terminology and found the program Celestia, basically a space version of google earth and I've spent all morning on it since lol. This program is immense, its inspired to get into 3d space scenes & stuff like that. Its like space is all about size but how can we comprehend something that is UNLIMITED in size? I remember my days of reading HP Lovecraft and The Dark Tower, I gotta get back into my spacey-state of mind :P

Been slacking off a lot recently, been caught up with important things such as Super Mario Galaxy, Team Fortress 2, Half life 2 and I just got the wii zapper yesteday which totally PWNS!! Anyway not many people will read this but oh well who cares? Ok my terminator model thing is...coming along. I have everything designed down on paper on how I will make it, its just a case of me putting the effort in and making that start :P Been messing around with animation a lot recently but I only know the basics but I hope to buy a book on it (its the best way I learn ;)) and then I can begin making some proper mental stuff. Other than that I will keep trying my best to improve my standards of work :D

Terminator Model

Wed Oct 17, 2007, 10:50 PM
My first epic designing, modeling and rendering of a Terminator.

I think I've got to the stage where I need to make something really good, and over a long period of time. I watched Terminator 2 recently and it has inspired me, always been one of my most favourite films anyway so I'll make my next project a high poly model of a Terminator robot-skeleton thing.
Done loads of research to get a basic concept of where to start, and then I'll design everything acuratley on graph paper. I think the best way to go about this is to do each arm, leg, torso..etc seperatley and in multiple views so I can model this in the same way on C4d then put them all together for the final character model.
I'm scared that I'll mess it up, even thinking about getting the shape of the skull is right daunting but I'll do my best :)
I will probs sumit the wireframe version first to see what it looks like and what people think of it, and add textures after since that will take a while also, getting them to look really good and all...

May take a fortnight, may take 4 months...I've got a lot of other work to do in in the meantime, but I'll submit it when I'm ready!

Anyway, this will remind my lazy ass to get to work on this whenever I go to my deviantart, thanks for reading ppl! I hope you get to see the final version!

Off to work I go...
