My method of modeling on most of my work has been pretty similar, in most cases polygonal modeling and not really using shapes, splines, and Nurbs to the best effect that they hold. To boost my 3d-ness I just went back through a load of stuff in my book and took notes on all the different approaches to modeling, which will be really helpfull in expanding my 3d skills when used effectively.
It's not that I have a lack of ideas on what to model, its a case of how I should approach the work, and sometimes when I'm not too sure I get scared and decide to turn away from the idea. I was lying awake in bed last night thinking some stuff through when I had the idea of creating a fully life-size scene from command and conquer, buildings and units and everything like in from a persons pespective.
What I think puts me off from making such large scenes is the time it takes and whether I will mess up in the process, but I need to learn that 3d isn't just something you 'get' it's something you can never really get since it has unlimited potential and you can't create a fairly decent piece of work in a small amount of time, not that I'm saying quick models are not good, I'm saying that getting something perfect for yourself, tweaking and such can take a lot longer than it seems.
Anyway, IMO all this abstract stuff I've done recently isnt really modeling, its just kinda playing around in the 3d environment and placing objects in correspondance to others, yeh it looks good but its not really truly using the program effectively so I'm going to drop abstract soon and begin working on the more realistic side of things.

Will I come up for air
Come up for air
After a while
The current is calling me
Lulling me
Waving goodbye
I'm out here alone
Oh, God can you save me now?
